Legislative Advocacy
One of the benefits of being a part of the Arc network is the power in numbers that we have in our national and state wide legislative advocacy efforts. The Arc networks - nationwide, statewide and local - are comprised of highly skilled individuals who demonstrate to government officials the needs of the population we serve, and how they, as officials, can make these needs be met.
The Arc of the US describes Public Policy work done by the Arc as follows:
The Arc pursues its legislative goals by working with the U.S. Congress and the administration to enact laws that improve the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. The Arc also wants to keep all chapters and members of the association well-informed about national policies that impact the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With this information, The Arc exercises its grassroots strength to better the lives of all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. For more information on the Public Policy work of the Arc at the national lever, please visit their website at www.TheArc.org.
The Purpose of the Arc of Greater Boston Government Affairs Committee is to communicate to legislators and other government officials the needs and priorities of people with cognitive disabilities ~ and advocate for appropriate laws and budgets.
The Arc of Greater Boston's extensive knowledge and compassionate understanding of these needs gives us a special relationship with legislators. Here is how they describe our efforts:
- "You motivate and educate us to vote for your issues."
- "You are the best qualified to keep your needs in the forefront."
- "You help us put human faces on issues and statistics."
- "You never let us forget our state's most vulnerable citizens."
- "You let us know that our efforts on your behalf are truly worth fighting for."
If you are interested in becoming active in the Legislative Advocacy efforts of the Arc of Greater Boston in any way, whether by calling, writing, or emailing your senator and representative on important issues, or if you’d like to join us on Capital Hill when we visit in person, please give us a call.
