Our Mission

The Arc of Greater Boston, an association of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (commonly known as mental retardation), family members, and other concerned citizens, strives to improve the quality of life of children and adults with intellectual and related disabilities and their families through public education, legislative advocacy, self-advocacy, and program development and implementation. The Arc of Greater Boston operates as an agency within the Greater Boston Area and commits to:

  • Advocating for public and social policy, legislation, and the array of services and supports that people with disabilities and their families say they want and need;
  • Supporting children and adults with disabilities to achieve their goals as valued members of their communities;
  • Strengthening the ability of individuals and families from diverse cultural backgrounds to secure culturally competent services and supports;
  • Promoting inclusion and the self-determination of children and adults with disabilities;
  • Educating the community about the capabilities and gifts of people with disabilities; and
  • Creating and implementing innovative services that reflect full inclusion, choice, active participation and self-determination of people with disabilities.
